Ben's is a rectangular shaped lake just under an acre in size housing 20 pegs, Ben's has no main features but is popular with both pleasure and match anglers.
With an average depth of about 4/5ft Ben's is similar to Dragon in that it has a marginal shelf running out around 2/3ft from the bank.
In summer it is often worth fishing on top of this shelf as you can pick up patrolling carp, particularly on warm evenings.
Pleasure anglers tend to float fish Bens either with pole or waggler, using cheese, paste, pellet, maggots, casters, luncheon meat or tinned cat meat in summer or maggots or casters in winter.
Because the water holds a good number of decent size carp, anglers are recommended to fish a 5lb or 6lb line with 14 or 16 hook.
Anglers opting for the feeder or straight lead tend to fish to the middle of the water using small boilies/wafters, hard banded pellet, dead reds, sweetcorn or the bread punch.
Again Ben's is a popular match water and because the peg's are close to the car park it's particularly suitable for disabled anglers, having a good solid and even grass bank with superb flat easily accessible pegs.
A new match record for Ben's was set in 2006 at 166lbs by a local match angler who fished pellet up in the water on the pole from Peg 1.
A similar technique also works well when fishing the waggler, although anglers must remember to feed little and often to attract the fish around their bait and to hold them there.
Stocked predominantly with carp, roach, rudd and perch, Ben's is a good all year round water. The carp are predominantly a mix of mirrors, commons and ghosties with the majority of fish in the 5lbs to 7lbs range although there are a few double-figure fish that can be a nice surprise.
Stock & Species
Ben's is well stocked with Carp, Roach, Rudd and Perch along with a handful of tench and a few bonus koi carp. There are Perch that can run to 3lbs or possibly even bigger, plenty of Roach/ Rudd around the 8oz mark as well as a good head of skimmers. The most recent stocking was of 500 Carp which averaged about 6 inches in size. As of the start of 2018, the carp we most recently stocked are now around the 4lb-6lb mark plus the carp that already existed in the lake creating a really good balance. They are few and far between but it is not unknown to catch a Carp pushing the 15lb mark. The overall stock really is impressive with winning Match Weights normally around the 100lb mark. Match weight's should improve following the ongoing stocking programme at the fishery.
It is Lavender Hall's policy to be fair and honest with the visitors to their waters and for this reason we have no silly rules. Very few visitors are banned from the waters or told to leave but the bailiff or staff will send anglers away if they blatantly disregard the rules that we do have. For instance anglers have been told to leave after parking their vehicles on the grass having driven past notices saying they should not do so, standing up with fish, lighting fires on the bank, being abusive and spoiling the fishing for others, leaving their rods unattended and leaving litter.
Lavender Hall operates a zero tolerance policy to any acts of aggression or abuse towards its bailiff and staff.
Please read these rules carefully before coming to fish this water.
